Dr. Shiro grew up in Waterville, Maine. He graduated
from Williams College in 1980 and earned his medical
degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine
in 1985. He spent one year, 1983, completing a fellowship
in pathology at U.V.M.
While at Williams College, Dr. Shiro coached the women’s
hockey team and lettered in golf. He was, otherwise,
a typical pre-medical student who spent all of his time
in the library (re-named Shiro Memorial Library by his
classmates). His senior honors thesis in biology was
entitled “The Maturation-Delaying Effects of the
Mature Female Mouse’s (Mus Muculus) Urine After
Adrenalectomy and Hormone Replacement Therapy.”
After medical school, Dr. Shiro migrated south and
landed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina for his residency
and fellowship training; developing expertise in gastrointestinal,
oral and immunohistochemical pathology. Wilmington has
provided numerous opportunities to continue these interests.
He acknowledges that the energy and high quality of
the physicians of Wilmington provides an incentive to
continuously improve pathology services.
While studying and practicing in North Carolina he
fell in love with the state and with a lovely, red-headed
Tar Heel alum, Donna Worthington. They have been married
for over 15 years and are blessed with son Zachary,
daughter Alexis and two great dogs - Max and Keebler. The Shiro family loves
the great North Carolina weather, the people and the
restaurants of Wilmington. When not working, Dr. Shiro
enjoys spending time with his family, investing, reading, playing hockey, golfing, fitness training
and computer games.
