Wilmington Pathology Associates (WPA) was founded in 1976, and began serving New Hanover County as a hospital based group at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. WPA has grown to provide pathology services for Cape Fear Hospital, Wilmington SurgCare, Pender Memorial Hospital, Brunswick Community Hospital and many independent physicians’ practices.

Wilmington Pathology Associates opened a free standing laboratory in June 2000, focusing on cytology, particularly monolayer ThinPrep™ Pap tests and HPV testing. In March of 2001, a full service histology laboratory was added to enhance our level of patient care. WPA employs thirty team members ranging from pathologists and a microbiologist to cytotechnologists, histology technicians, lab technicians, transcriptionists, administrative assistants, sales people, business managers and couriers.

Through this independent laboratory, WPA has grown to offer a full range of surgical pathology and cytology services including:

• Next day turn around on most biopsy specimens
